Call Your Mother

If your mother’s in the same room with you, stop reading now!

Josh Seftel’s story (A Mother, a Son, and an iPad, on CBS Sunday Morning this week) hit all the right cords for me. Go watch it now. I’ll wait.

<drumming fingers…>

My mom developed lung cancer, what the docs thought was non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). About 85% to 90% of lung cancers are non-small cell. She was a smoker for close to 50 years but quit in the 80s.

She tried a variety of treatments and ended up in a drug trial for one of the then-new NSCLC regimens. It seemed to work; she was in remission for almost five years. Then it metastasized to her brain.

Mary HarperShe did chemo. She did radiation. Her hair fell out. She borrowed a blonde “fright wig” from the oncology center in Key West.

I was extraordinarily lucky. See, since I’m self-unemployed as a writer, photographer, boat builder, and engineering consultant, I can arrange my schedule to suit myself. I spent several weeks down here just visiting when she was dying but still comfortable enough to visit.

We caught up. We told the family stories and the family lies. We shopped. We read. We went to a couple of art shows. We played cards and watched tube. We even went out on Joe’s boat.

I was blessed.

My mom died in 2002 about three weeks after I left; my dad died unexpectedly in 2005.

Now I wonder how much I missed, simply because the technology we take for granted today just wasn’t there.

Skype™ was first released in 2003 and sold to eBay about six months after my dad died but I doubt I was even aware of it for another couple of years after that. I don’t think we started using it before 2011. Now it’s an everyday thing.

I “teleconference” with clients over Skype™ now, which is a PITA because it means I have to put on a shirt. With a collar.

A business in Oregon just interviewed my friend (and North Puffin’s mayor and general roue) Beau Pinder when he was looking for a job out west. Reporters use it more and more to “phone in” stories or to interview news makers.

Anne and I have Skyped™ when she was up north and I down here. Rufus and I used it when he had to head north and I needed to know what to pack in his truck. Nancy and I Skype™ almost every day.

Mr. Seftel uses it to talk with his mother.

“My mommy refuses to connect to the Interwebs,” Liz Arden said. “She doesn’t want any form of computer, nor an Internet account, nor a talking TV.

“I have told her about Skype™ and how easy it is for me to sit on a computer or in front of my tablet and communicate and how lovely it is to see the face of the person I’m talking to. She dislikes computers and doesn’t ‘hear’ how easy tablets and Chromebooks are to set up and use.”

I understand that. My mom refused to learn how a gas pump worked. Mr. Seftel’s mother still seems to have some technical difficulties with her iPad.

Oh, sure, I know all the reasons from technical to political not to use Skype™. <shrug> So use Facetime, or Facebook, or hangout on Google, or ICQ, or ooVoo, or any of a dozen other lesser-known services.

Go skype your mother. She’s waiting.

Giving Thanks

Today is America’s primary pagan festival, celebrated to show love to the gods for a bountiful harvest on a New England day in which fields are now mostly covered in snow and which George Washington proclaimed as a day of thanks as a national remembrance.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor, and Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me ‘to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness’.”

While it is easy for this curmudgeonly writer to kvetch about the corruption and thievery stretching from here to Washington or to fret that my truck needs new brake lines and my little house needs new shingles, those are just everyday irritants and (thankfully) I know how to fix them.

I am thankful I have a white truck. Not to mention a (topless)(white) car. And that Anne has white car.

I am thankful my grandfather at age 94 decided to live out his very good life in the Keys.

I am thankful I started my life as an engineer and am now spending some of it as an artist.

I am thankful we will have friends here today.

I am thankful my children, my grandchildren, and my great-grandchildren are happy, healthy, and will be well fed again today.

I am thankful Anne is here today and will be here tomorrow.

I am thankful for Anne and for Nancy, two loving, caring, beautiful ladies. I am blessed.

And I have pah!

Ben Franklin thought the turkey should be America’s bird so I’m thankful to have found a big inflatable turkey in a local yard. The original Thanksgiving Perspective is here.

ahh, supper

And the Hits Just Keep on Coming…

Two more not so affordable parts of the Unaffordable Health Care Act:

1. You don’t qualify for a subsidy if your income is less than 100% of the Federal Poverty Level.

2. Likewise you don’t get a subsidy if your filing status is “married filing separately.” If you’re married, your tax filing status must be “married filing jointly” in order to qualify for a subsidy.

“So, the poor folk this is designed to cover can’t afford it?”

$11,490. That’s the 2013 Federal Poverty Guideline for one individual living anywhere in the 48 Contiguous States and the District of Columbia.
$11,491. That’s the minimum one individual living anywhere in the 48 Contiguous States and the District of Columbia can earn to qualify for an Obamacare subsidy
25,273,000. That’s the number of individuals living anywhere in the 48 Contiguous States and the District of Columbia who earn less than $11,490.
25,273,000. That’s the number of individuals living anywhere in the 48 Contiguous States and the District of Columbia who don’t qualify for Obamacare premium tax credits or cost-sharing subsidies.

That’s right, Pookie, if you are the poorest of the poor, you don’t get premium tax credits or cost-sharing subsidies. [Note to those who are counting, some but not all of those 25,273,000 do qualify for Medicaid.]

“And if you and your spouse don’t live together, you’re basically screwed.”

About 2,408,000 people filed separate returns in 2009, the most recent year the IRS has published. About 1,811,779 (One million, eight hundred eleven thousand, seven hundred seventy-nine) of those reported less that $49,960 in income, the cut-off for individual subsidies. One point eight million people left out by the Unaffordable Care Act.

Well, Pookie, you might not be getting screwed but, yeah, you are.

If you support Obamacare, this is what your crutch hath wrought.

Pogo: We Have Met the Enemy

Cluster Fudge

My second favorite fudge, layered of chocolate and Key lime, comes from Key Weird. This ain’t that.

Still, South Puffin is in about the geographic middle of Monroe County, the southernmost county in Florida, and home of that fudge. Cluster and otherwise.

Our county School District is $1.2 million in the hole again.

Regular readers might recall that the Monroe County School District has a history. A jury found former school superintendent Randy Acevedo guilty of three felonies for abetting his wife’s theft of public funds and off to jail he went. His wife, ousted Adult Education Coordinator Monique Acevedo, had pled guilty to six felony counts for stealing $413,000 from the district, although she blamed her crimes on an “undetected bipolar disorder made worse by an addiction to oxycodone.”

Alrighty then.

Enter Gov. Rick Scott who “gave” teachers a $2,500 raise this year; the boost was one of his priorities from the 2013 legislative session. So far, 17 Florida school districts have sorted out the pay raises and 50 have not.

Monroe County’s new school superintendent went a different route.

See, Mr. Acevedo and his successor, Jesus Jara, left district finances in the toilet. The unions refused to let the board reduce salaries. The electric company refused to waive the electric bills. The buses were already running on fumes. The board opted to furlough teachers, staff, and blue collar workers.

It was not a popular move among teachers, staff, and blue collar workers. They called the furloughs a “pay cut.”

“Randy and Jara spent your paychecks,” Superintendent Mark Porter told the teachers.

The furlough program has been in place since 2011 and has saved the district $1.7 million each of the past two years but it was a bad solution to a lousy problem and Mr. Porter wanted to end it.

The super tapped $1.4 million from Gov. Scott’s mandated teacher raise program to underwrite the cost of ending the furloughs.

Now state officials say the new’s plan to use the new state money is illegal. That means the state says we had to keep furloughing our employees to cover costs but we also have to give them raises while they are not being paid.

Huh?

Flag of the Conch Republic -- Motto: We Seceded Where Others FailedAs an aside, it’s mostly our (local) money. Because Monroe is considered “property-rich,” 90% of school funding is raised through local property taxes, with the remaining 10% coming from the state. That means of the $1.4 million earmarked for the raises, the state kicked in about twenty-seven cents.

There was a reason the Conch Republic seceded from the United States in 1982. It is time to remind Tallahassee we still have our flags.

Worth remembering: the word “Fudge” in this usage is not the chocolatey goodness that sticks to your fingers but rather a substitute for a fine, graphic, four-letter Anglo-Saxon term.

Obamacare, the Good, the Bad, and the Wugly

The Good:
“I ventured into the ACA minefield,” my friend Fanny Guay said. “I found I can get ‘gold premium’ coverage for about what I am paying now, thanks to the subsidy.”

Enola “Fanny” Guay’s parents joined the back-to-the-land movement in Vermont at the Nearings old farm house, far from big government and rampant consumerism. Ms. Guay’s friends are now the power brokers and consumers of Montpelier but she just lost her job with a small heating assistance NGO when they lost their outreach contract with the University. I’ve known her for nearly 50 years; she was pro-Cheryl Rivers in Vermont years ago and is pro-Obamacare now.

The Bad:
The real subsidy gotcha comes when Ms. Guay discovers that her subsidy isn’t a guarantee; it is an early refund of an income tax credit. A guarantee on Obamacare that isn’t, well, guaranteed? Imagine that.

Ms. Guay hopes to find a new job next year but says, “I figured the cost on my unemployment and some part-time. I hope that’s not what really happens.”

The “subsidy” will bite many, many people who calculate it based either on a low 2012 tax return or on a calculation like Ms. Guay’s and then end up with an increase in taxable income when they file their 2014 returns.

Imagine you earned $20,000 this year. Now imagine that your $20,000 income gets bumped to $50,000 by a windfall — it could be capital gain from a stock sale, a temporary consulting job, or a gambling win.

Warning! Real Data Ahead! ACA Supporters please stop reading here!
I ran those numbers at thehealthsherpa.com and discovered that the Gold plan Ms. Guay found might have a $981.26 base monthly premium but would cost the $20K earner just $321.53 per month thanks to a $659.73 subsidy. Unfortunately, with the windfall, that single insured person would have an unexpected “extra” tax bill of $7,916.76 due April 15, 2015, because the monthly subsidy on her $50 grand income drops to $0!

Kaiser Permanente says “In determining eligibility for exchange subsidies, income will be based on your attestation of your expected income in 2014 and will be verified by the exchange with documentation from your most recent tax return, with consideration of reasonable changes you expect. Exchanges will calculate enrollees’ household incomes using Modified Adjusted Gross Income, or MAGI. The MAGI calculation includes such income sources as wages, salary, foreign income, interest, dividends, and Social Security. MAGI calculation does not include income from gifts, inheritance and some other income sources are partially excluded.” More information on MAGI is available in a report from UC-Berkeley).

We are so screwed.

The Really Bad:
I compared what I have now to a “pretty good” similar plan with the closest deductible I could find.

Here’s the BlueOptions Everyday Health 1420 “Gold” plan on the Exchange. The Annual Deductible at $2,500 for me will be $50 more than I pay now. The co-insurance at 20% will be twice as much as my current coinsurance. The premium will be $1,084.67, or $653.67 per month more than my current premium.

My Current Blue Cross Blue Shield PlanOuch.

Here’s the Blue Cross Blue Shield plan plan I currently have. The plan Mr. Obama cancelled. The Annual Deductible at $2,450 for me is $50 less than the most comparable plan I can find under ACA. The co-insurance at 10% is *half* as much the coinsurance in the most comparable plan I can find under ACA. The premium is $431/month this year. The premium for the most comparable plan I can find under ACA will be $1,084.67 or 653.67 more than my current premium.

So the ACA that Mr. Obama guaranteed to let me keep my plan and guaranteed to save me money nearly triples my cost.

I am so screwed.

The Wugly:
Forbes analyzed the data. “If you’re healthy today, you will face steeper rate increases than these figures indicate. If you have a serious medical condition, however, and haven’t been able to find affordable health coverage as a result, you will do much better under Obamacare than the average person.”

“But Dick,” Ms. Guay said, “Now I have insurance that covers my pre-existing conditions and that I can afford!”

Yeppers.

Too bad you liberals had to cover Ms. Guay by making sure young men pay thousands extra at the point of a gun. They don’t vote anyway.

Too bad you liberals had to cover Ms. Guay by making sure I pay thousands extra to change a plan I did like. Also at the point of a gun. I don’t cast enough votes to matter, either.

Too bad you liberals had to cover Ms. Guay by giving the insurance companies yet another welfare check instead of fixing the problem.

Too bad you liberals won’t guarantee the “subsidy” so Ms. Guay can afford that plan past the next election.

… BREAKING NEWS #1 …

ACA forced carriers to cancel policies for 5 million people.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that fewer than 27,000 people signed up for plans in October. About 79,391 more signed up through state-based exchanges, 30,000 in California alone.

100,000 sucked in … 5,000,000 shafted out.
Government in action, baby. Government in action.

… BREAKING NEWS #2 …

Mr. Obama reversed course on Thursday and said millions of Americans should be allowed to renew individual plans and small group plans like mine just cancelled under his watch.*

Like Gov. Shumlin before him, Mr. Obama didn’t ask the insurance companies. Insurance spokesmen and state insurance commissioners immediately warned that prices will skyrocket.
* If the insurers refuse to reinstate now, of course, now they bear all responsibility for the cancellations.
Right.
