Good Money After Bad, Redux

The news reported that the automaker CEOs will return to testify again this week

The President-elect will “pay close attention” to what the CEOs say. Barney Rubble plans to beat them up again no matter what the Congressman said on 60 Minutes. The Toyota Republicans say we ought not let Congress mess with a free market economy.

There is a timeworn and well known joke:

An older and particularly odious man approached a beautiful woman. “Would you sleep with me for 700 billion dollars?” he asked.

“Oh, I have to think about that. Yes!” she said.

“Would you sleep with me for one dollar?” he asked.

“Never! What do you think I am?”

“Madam, we have already established that. Now we are simply negotiating the price.”

We ought not let Congress mess with a free market economy??? Sorry, folks, that horse has long since left the barn.

Bombing Out

I was not even alive — heck, I was not even a gleam in my daddy’s eye — when the Japanese Imperial forces bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, the Day that was expected to Live in Infamy. But I know what day it was.

Sunday, not today, was the 67th anniversary of that memorable day. Ceremonies were held around the country yesterday. On the actual day. So why are most media reporting it today? Why did most media not report it yesterday?

I guess that fits with our desire to make everything a Monday holiday. Monday is a slow news day, innit, but still…

I’m sure some news outlets did cover the day on the day. None of the ones I saw or heard did. I’m on a rant here; don’t confuse me with the exceptions.

Change?

Change has come to America and Republicans can rejoice. After 8 scandal free years inside the Beltway, the Clinton Administration is back!

U.S. President-elect Barack Obama formally nominated Timothy Geithner as Treasury secretary and Lawrence Summers for the National Economic Council. Geithner worked for Summers who was Treasury secretary under Clinton. Hillary Clinton looks to be Secretary of State. Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico is the likely Secretary of Commerce. He was Energy Secretary and U.N. Ambassador under Clinton. Tom Daschle as Secretary of HHS may not sound like a Clintonite but he did lead the defense in the Senate.

Slightly more nebulous, Eric Holder served as deputy attorney general under Clinton and may get a promotion from Obama. Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona at Homeland Security served as attorney for Anita Hill in the Senate hearings and is a former U.S. attorney appointed by Clinton.

I’m thinking it is time to pull that biological-fluids-coated dress away from Gil Grissom and give it back to the media.

Don’t Plug In, Whatever You Do!

Electric utilities in Vermont are worried about the high cost of home heating oil. They fear consumers will be inclined to use electric space heaters to heat their homes this winter.

Hey, I’ve been running the numbers on that. At over $4/gallon for oil, the 11 or 12 cent kilowatt-hour looks pretty good.

The utilities say their grid, particularly in Southern Vermont, cannot handle the added load if we all turn on a space heater.

And they want us to add plug-in electric cars to the mix?

Ye gods.

Wimps

The DNC caved.

We all knew they would; they are, after it is all said and done, professional panderers.

I had hoped, however, that they would hew to their own rules.

Perhaps they did. After all, Rule Number One at the DNC is to pander to whomever prostrates themselves the loudest. Read more. . .
