In the ethic of outdoorsman/huntsmanship it is considered bad form to shoot a duck while it is sitting on the water. Hence the unflattering term, “He was a sitting duck”. However, I frequently did because it saved mine and the dog’s energy in retrieving. When so, my dad always wagged his finger at me clicked his tongue, tsk tsk tsk.
