  1. Cylindrically shaped bales are good for the hay haulers because a truck can drive between the widely spaced bales, and two or three young boys can roll them to the truck and save gas. A boom mechanism on the truck can then lift the heavy bale onto the bed.

    I put myself through puberty as a summertime hay hauler. $10 a day — dawn till dusk — with a meal.

    • I took the picture just across the border in a Quebec field. Can’t much tell the difference since hay is bilingual. Not many kids around to work the fields here today so the farmers (mostly) do it all mechanically now.
