Today is the deadline for the DOJ to turn over any evidence of wiretap activity at Trump Tower or of the Trump campaign.

CNN reports that Congress has pressed the Department of Justice to “provide any documents … that the Obama administration wiretapped his phones at Trump Tower during the campaign.

The House Intelligence Committee has set a Monday deadline for the DOJ to provide the evidence, a source familiar with the matter has told CNN, and has sent letters throughout the intelligence community this week to obtain records related to Russia.”

Most of us expect the answer to be “We found no evidence of legal wiretaps.”

Well, duh.

Why on this green Earth does anyone — inside the Beltway or out — think illegal wiretaps would have been done legally?

If NSA or Central Intelligence or the Plumber’s Union did break the law to surveil the campaign, there is absolutely no good reason they would obey the law to get a FISA (or any other) warrant.

  1. Do you suppose they have standing wiretaps on a lot of Russians, with recordings that they may have been reviewing to see if any of the comms involved some of your Trumpies?

    Iz possible.

    • Sure. As your link and my front page image show, “the F.B.I. is leading the investigations, aided by the National Security Agency, the C.I.A. and the Treasury Department’s financial crimes unit.”

That would be the same F.B.I., N.S.A., C.I.A. and Treasury Department who swore there were no wiretaps. The same F.B.I., N.S.A., C.I.A. or Treasury Department wiretaps that sank Gen. Flynn.

As our friend House said, “Everybody lies.” I’m just tired of them lying to *us*

  2. Doesn’t matter. If Obama himself admitted in a sworn deposition that he ordered illegal wiretaps of Trump’s campaign headquarters, the Stupids would somehow rationalize it away as GOP lies.

  3. Doesn’t matter a whit. If Obama himself went on live tv and admitted that he ordered illegal wiretaps of Trump’s campaign headquarters, the Stupids would somehow rationalize it away as GOP lies.

  4. Obviously, the idea that this is just another paranoid fantasy from inside Trump’s head is absolutely inconceivable.

    • Stevve, a similar idea is that Mr. Trump intentionally threw the accusation out to divert us from his possible connection with the Russians.

The “oh look, a squirrel” technique is *always* a possibility no matter which side of the aisle you question.

      <shrug>

That we are willing to prove the truth either way is worth something.

  5. The is a distinction between seeing a new wiretap on campaign headquarters, and utilizing an existing one on Russian persons or buildings of interest, yes?

Isn’t your President’s claim that he and his campaign were wiretapped, and the b discussion surrounding a new FISA warrant aimed at him?

    • Here’s Mr. Trump’s Tweet chain from March 4:

Is it legal for a sitting President to be “wire tapping” a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!

I’d bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election!

How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!

So, yes, Mr. Trump tweeted that he and his campaign were wiretapped (which leaves open the question of whether the tapping was incidental or not). The press decided on its own that the only way that could happen was a new FISA warrant aimed at him and that if there was no FISA warrant we could impeach him.
